THE LEGEND IS BORN: HISTORY OF THE FORD F-150

The Ford F-150 roots go back to 1948 when Ford introduced the “F-Series” trucks. There were three models available which included the F-1, F-2 and F-3. These were half ton, three quarter ton and heavy duty trucks that appealed primarily to ranch and farm workers at the time. In 1953, Ford began the process of “consumerizing” the F-150 by modifying the truck’s exterior to be sleeker. This trend continued over the next decade as Ford continued to refine and evolve their truck lineup.

Ford went back to the drawing board in 1961 and launched an all-new F-Series line. The truck line continued to gain popularity and in 1975 Ford launched the first truck with the F-150 nameplate. The F-150 was an immediate success and quickly became one of the best sellers among the F-Series line of pickup trucks. As in the previous decade, Ford continued to concentrate on improving engine power and performance across the F-Series line of trucks.

In 1982, the familiar blue Ford oval began appearing on the front of the F-150. By this time, the F-150 had become so popular that it was not only the best-selling truck, but also the overall best-selling vehicle in the United States. Riding this unprecedented wave of success, Ford took the bold step of making significant changes to the F-150 in 1987. The truck’s interior equipment saw significant improvement and Ford began implementing safety technology that the other manufacturers were still years behind on.

Throughout the 1990’s and into the 2000’s, Ford continued to stay ahead of the pack when it came to new technology and engineering in their truck lineup. The F-150 continues to be the best-selling vehicle in the United States and shows no sign of giving up the crown anytime soon.
