A LOOK INTO THE FORD EXPLORER’S PAST

The Ford Explorer replaced the automaker’s long running Bronco II model in 1991. While some automotive pundits questioned the decision, consumers didn’t and the Explorer was an immediate hit. Buyers had been craving a vehicle that provided the roominess of a minivan without the minivan “stigma” and the Explorer filled this void. The first year of Explorer sales saw it surpass many of the more established SUVs at the time and Ford knew that it had a bona-fide hit on their hands. Ford made the decision to offer the Explorer in a four door configuration (the Bronco II had traditionally only been offered with two doors) and this helped propel the vehicle to record early sales.

Explorer sales continued to explode into 1995 when Ford made the decision to tweak the vehicle’s exterior. Ford also included a revolutionary (at the time) “Control Trac” four wheel drive system that allowed full time use of the vehicle’s 4x4 capabilities. Up until this time, the driver would have to make the decision on whether to engage the four wheel drive system. Control Trac detected when four wheel drive was needed and would automatically engage it in the vehicle.

By the year 1998, the Explorer had easily become the best-selling SUV in America and showed no signs of slowing down. Ford continued in the ensuing years to refine the Explorer inside and out to keep its best-selling SUV crown secure. In 2002, Ford completely redesigned the Explorer offering a bigger, sleeker vehicle that was a hit with SUV buyers in the North American market.

Over the next decade and a half, Ford has continued to evolve the Explorer to match consumers’ ever changing needs and tastes. Today’s Explorer is more fuel efficient and technology heavy than ever before and that’s a good thing. Explorer sales continue to be robust and drivers will long sing the praises of this ground breaking SUV.
